Hello My name is Emma Figures, and I'm a 2nd Year Student at Jesus College, Cambridge University. I am currently working as an 'Access Officer', so trying to widen access to Cambridge and encourage a broader range of people to apply to study here. I am trying to encourage applicants frpm those groups that are under-represented at the university, whether it be mature students, ethnic minorites, students from Northern England, Scotland and Wales, and especially those from State Schools. My focus at present is on the NORTH-EAST Region. I was wondering whether you would be interested in a new scheme I am thinking of organising - 'An Access Bus'. The scheme is currently in the making, so any feedback or ideas you could give me, as to what you feel is needed to encourage more people to apply to, not just Cambridge, but university in general, would be very welcome. The idea I have at the moment, is to come for a day or two up the Newcastle/Sunderland, with about 6 other students, to run workshops with State school pupils in number of schools, and to organise a speacial joint parents/teachers evening in a central School/Hall/other suitable location to talk directly about their children's options and the role that they can play in these. I was thinking about targetting Year 12 pupils, but if you feel that it would be more beneficial to talk to Pre-GCSE Yr 10/11's about the importance of exams and thinking about future uni options, I would be happy to do this. Perhaps we could even run something at a Centre for Learning to try to target more mature students? Any advice or contacts you could give me for this would be greatly appreciated. Basically, as you may or may not be aware, there already exists large Cambridge/Oxford Convention days at St James' Park and the Stadium of Light (I can send more details of these if needed).... However, I am planning this new initiative to try to create more personal visits and to try to reach out to those who may not be able to make these Conventions. Possible dates being for the proposed 'Access Bus' could be Feb 28th/March 1st, but these are very flexible. I'd really like to hear some feedback form you and whether you know of a school/institution in Newcastle/Sunderland that might be interested in a visit. . Thanks for taking the time to read my long, waffling email. Have a great weekend and I hope to hear from you soon, Emma :)
