Hi

Burghley Road School was the first school I attended.  It was probably in 1949/50.  I remember the school as being old (Victorian), with brick stairwells.

Could someone at the school let me know if your Acland Burghley School is the same one?  I would be interested to know if the old building still exists and when the old school was first opened for pupils.

If so I wonder if it is possible to research school registers/reports at the time I attended the school.

Regards

Coral Simmonds (nee Fitzsimons)

Hello Coral,

I was at Burghley Road School the same time as you. I still have the book "London Adventures" that was given to all pupils to celebrate the coronation of Elizabeth 2nd on 2nd June 1953. I have many memories of the place but the most abiding are the names of two of my teachers - Miss Kirby and Mr Webb who not only taught us how to place chess but also ran a harmonica band.

Acland Burghley stands on the same site - but it is not the same school.

Hallo to anyone who ever attended Burghley Road School. I very much doubt you can go back to my time...mid- to late 30's!! I have fond memories of Margaret Radcliffe and I believe I can recall 2 masters.....headmaster Velacott and form-master Davies (no such thing as women teachers in those days!) but maybe the only reason I think I remember them is because I have a school photo which shows them in all their grandeur.  3-piece suits, of course ties, stiff collars, heavy fob-watch chains across their expansive fronts....the epitome of gravitas! We shall not see their like again....(Hands up the boy who said "Thank God!").

Hello to Guy.
My mother started at Burghley Road School in about 1932, aged about 11 years, and I'm trying to get some information/photos or something. She is now starting Altzheimers and I am going to make up some form of 'Memory Book' for her.
Her name at the time was Irene Carroll. Dark hair and very tiny.
If you have any memories of her, or any photos etc this would be a great help.

Hello,

My mother irene ward and her twin brother johnny ward were at burghley road school probably at the same time 1945 - 1950, I don't think their memories were particulary good but I am curious if anybody remembers them or has any photos etc. of this time.

They also had siblings called Mabel, Betty, Charlie and Raymond all at the school around the same time.

Thank you

Lizzy
