Peak Time -

Pension - A type of savings scheme that you and your employer or just your employer contributes to during your working life. Upon retirement you are entitled to draw the money in the scheme either in a lump sum or annually.

Personnel Department - The department responsible for the general well-being and contractual aspects of employees of an organisation. They will be involved in the recruiting process, appraisals and salary reviews, disciplinary actions, health and safety at work and act as a mediator in the event of issues between employees and the employer.

Postgraduate - A student who has graduated.

P38 - Everybody is entitled to a Personal Allowance, i.e. a sum they are able to earn before any tax is deducted. If a student gets a job during the long summer vacation and does not think they will earn for that tax year (i.e. April 6th to April 5th) the current amount applicable in the Personal Allowance, they can ask their employer to complete a P38 form to avoid tax being deducted at source.

P45 - A document given to you when you leave your existing employer. When you start work with your new employer you will need to give them the P45.

P46 - This is a form used by employer's to inform the tax office that employees have started work. Another form of significance is the P45, given to employees when they leave a job.

PGCE - Post-Graduate Certificate of Education is a course of initial teacher training for graduates and those with equivalent level qualifications, which, on successful completion, leads to recognition of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Normally the course duration is a year.

Plagiarism - Plagiarism refers to the act of using someone’s view or opinion as your own, without making proper references to it. It is not uncommon for students to plagiarise during their course but students who do so place themselves at risk of disciplinary action. Ensure that whenever, you have used an excerpt from a book, or an expert’s opinion, that you reference it correctly.

Post -

Presentation - A presentation is a means of assessment, which requires students to present their work orally in the presence of an audience. There are generally two types of presentation, namely informal and formal presentations. Informal presentations are laid back in that students will not be penalised for mishaps with the overhead projector etc. Formal presentations on the other hand are subject to scrutiny. Students will be required to dress appropriately and make effective use of equipment like the OHP. Presentations can either be undertaken individually or as part of a group.

Private Health Care - Health cover that you can either pay for or may be offered as a benefit by your employer. Allows you to fast-track diagnosis and treatment of illness. Benefits include, reduced or no waiting lists for appointments and operations, higher class of rooms in the event of an overnight or prolonged stay in hospital and free (pre-paid) treatment up to certain costs or recurrences based upon the signed contract.

Prospectus - A document provided by a , or advertising their educational facilities and services. Provides detailed information about the educational establishment together with a list and entry requirements (if any).

Project - A project is a task that must be completed within a much larger time scale than assignments. This is due to the fact that a project will involve some complex task, which will generally be composed of numerous smaller tasks. A project will have some specific goal and will require effective management of resources and time in order to complete it. Such management of time and resources is known as project management. Normally, a project will take one-to-two units or modules within the last year of a HND or Degree.

Public Transport - This term refers to modes of transport available to the general public as opposed to certain individuals. Such modes of transport include, Bus, Tube, Tram and Train.

Publication - A book, magazine or journal or newspaper that is available in print.

Punctuality - Prompt time keeping.
