Tailor - A person who makes clothes.

Tax - A percentage of your salary that is deducted and given to the government. The level of deduction depends upon the salary you earn. Individuals and companies have to pay tax.

Tax Benefit - This is a rebate on tax - in other words, it is a percentage of tax that does not need to be paid. Council Tax benefit is a rebate to help with up to 100% of the council tax, for those in financial difficulties.

Tax Credit - Is a sum of money that is paid to those in financial need as a bursary– i.e. it need not be paid back. Working Families Tax Credit is paid by the to help working families manage better. The amount paid depends on the families’ situation.

Tax Office - An office that deals with the taxation affairs for a community of people, normally within a postal area.

Teacher Training Agency - A government agency that provides support to the education profession.

Telephone Banking - A method of banking offered by many enabling you to check your account details over the phone as well as making payments.

Team Leader - When working in a group environment you will often be required to elect one member to lead the group. This person is termed the team leader. When selecting a team leader you should take great care, as there are a number of factors that can affect your choice. Failing to consider these factors may result in the election of someone not suitable to lead your group. They will be responsible for maintaining focus of the work to be undertaken and ensuring that everyone within the group uses their particular skills to ensure the groups success.

Training and Enterprise Council - This is usually in the form of individual companies that control the training schemes for the country. They also have been given a key role in ensuring that training and education, in addition to things like , will allow people to make the country’s economy grow by making them more skilled.

Thesis - A research paper written by post graduate students. Normally based upon a theory that the student wishes to investigate and will ideally based on an original idea.

Three Piece Suit - Normally consists of a jacket, waistcoat and trousers.

Timetable - A listing of services and when they can be expected.

Top-up Degree - A fast-track to completing a degree that is offered after the completion of a HND. Normally allows the student to start the Degree on the second or final years of course. Is available to students who have achieved high or exceptional grades and show the ability and desire to add a Degree qualification to their vocational achievement.

Trading Standards office - The organisation that controls the laws for trading, and sets the rules for many vendors and companies to abide to.

Train - A mode of rail transportation. The UK has train links that run across the breadth of the country.

Travel Card - A prepaid card allowing travel on the train, bus, tube. Available for a 24 hour period, a week, a month or a year.

Travel Documents - Documents that are required to enable you to use certain modes of transport. Passports and visas are required for air-travel to certain countries. Some countries may require documentation to enter or leave areas.

Traveller's Cheques - A that is issued by a , , travel agency or a company. This enables travellers to obtain cash in a foreign currency when abroad. Traveller’s cheques can be cashed at banks, exchange bureaus, restaurants, hotels, some shops, etc., when proof of identity is showed. These cheques are safer than money, as they can normally be insured against theft.

Tube - This is a mode of transport available to the general public (public transport). People are commonly confused by the difference between the tube and train. The fundamental difference is that the tube is a mode of transport that involves travelling underground, whilst trains involve over-ground travel.

Tuition Fees - These are fees that your educational establishment requires to cover the cost of providing education for you.

Tutor - Your tutor may or may not be distinct from your lecturer. The lecturer will simply run through his/her notes during a lecture, and will not provide one on one teaching. Your tutor on the other hand will be responsible for teaching a much smaller number of students and can therefore afford to spend time helping individuals.
